The Southeast Missouri State University Office of Career Services adheres to applicable federal and state EEO laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines, and offers employment information without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, citizenship, or identity as a military veteran unless legally required. Furthermore, in good faith, the Office of Career Services works only with those employers who subscribe to EEO guidelines and abides by the principles set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

Student Conduct

In accordance with the Southeast Code of Student Conduct, the Office of Career Services expects all students to maintain a high standard of conduct while on campus. This includes the utilization of Career Services resources. Any student behavior deemed, by the Office of Career Services, to violate this expectation may result in the behavior being reported to the Office of Student Conduct and the immediate restriction or suspension of services provided by the Office of Career Services.

Appointment and Mock Interview No-Show Policy

With a finite number of appointments available each week and an increasing demand for appointments, it is unacceptable for students to repeatedly reschedule or no-show for appointments with Career Services staff. Any student or alumnus who does not show up for an appointment will not be permitted to reschedule within one week of their original appointment time.

You will be considered a no-show if you:
  • Don't show up for an appointment and do not call to cancel (up to the start of the appointment time).
  • Arrive late (15 minutes or more) for an appointment scheduled with a staff member. The appointment will be recorded as a “no-show,” and the appointment will need to be rescheduled.
  • Late arrival (less than 15-minutes) for an appointment is not considered a no-show, but the appointment will be reduced by the number of minutes the student arrived late. All no-shows and repeated rescheduling of appointments are tracked within the Office of Career Services. Multiple no-shows may result in the loss of appointment based services for an identified time period. No-shows will be reset/cleared at the start of each academic year and will not carry over from year to year.

First No-Show

Student will receive an email notification of the missed scheduled appointment.

Second No-Show

In order to maintain the ability to schedule future appointments, the student or alumnus must schedule an appointment and meet with the Director of Career Services to discuss the no-show policy.

On-Campus Interview (with Employers) No-Show Policy

Students who do not show up for interviews or cancel less than 24 hours before an interview disrespect and greatly frustrate employers. No-shows often cause employers to cancel future visits to campus, hurting both current and future students. All no-shows are tracked within the Office of Career Services. Multiple no-shows may result in the loss of this service.
You will be considered a no-show if you:
  • Cancel a scheduled interview less than 24 hours before the scheduled interview.
  • Do not show up for an interview you have scheduled with an employer.
  • Arrive five (or more) minutes late for your scheduled interview with an employer.

First No-Show

Student is required to send an apology email (within 24 hours) to the employer and copy the Office of Career Services on this email at careerservices@semo.edu and dpresson@semo.edu

Second No-Show

Student is required to send an apology email (within 24 hours) to the employer and copy the Office of Career Services on this email at careerservices@semo.edu and dpresson@semo.edu

In order to maintain the ability to utilize these services, the student must schedule an appointment and meet with the Coordinator for Employer Relations to discuss the no-show policy and determine eligibility for future interview privileges.

Handshake

The Office of Career Services office provides Handshake, a career services software system for students and alumni of Southeast Missouri State University and employers seeking Southeast candidates for employment. Students and alumni can view, correct, or change their information by logging into their Handshake account. Handshake students and registered alumni can post resumes, view and apply for jobs, and more.

Student User Agreement for Handshake

The Office of Career Services is committed to complying with the ethical standards of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), and expects students and employers to be honest and professional in the internship and job search process.

As a student/alumni user of Handshake, I agree to:

  • Provide current, accurate and truthful information about my qualifications and educational background on my online profile, resume, supplemental job search documents uploaded to the system, and in my interactions with employers.
  • Be responsible for selecting an internship or job position. I understand that although Career Services reviews and approves all job vacancies, the posting of an internship or job on this site does not mean that Career Services is making any recommendation, representations or guarantees regarding the internship or job. I also understand I am responsible for requesting additional information from a potential internship site or employer as necessary to make my employment decisions.
  • Keep *all* interview appointments with employers or notify employers and Career Services in advance of any emergency requiring me to cancel my commitment. I understand that I must cancel or reschedule interviews in advance and that late cancellations or a “no-show” require an apology email or phone call to the employer.
  • Accept interviews with employers in which I have a sincere interest and prepare for each professionally, knowing that I represent both myself and Southeast Missouri State University.
Honor my acceptance of an internship or job offer. Once I accept an offer, I will withdraw from consideration for other opportunities and discontinue my job search. I will consult with Career Services staff regarding any extenuating circumstances that may cause me to re-evaluate my internship/job acceptance before notifying the employer.
  • Keep appointments made with Career Services staff and inform them if I cannot keep my commitment for any reason.
  • Protect and maintain my username and password and abide by Southeast Missouri State University computer use policies.

Suspension/Termination of Services

Handshake is a privilege and not a right, and services can be suspended or terminated at the discretion of the Office of Career Services. Students are encouraged to notify the Office of Career Services if they perceive any violations of ethical conduct on the part of employers. Career Services appreciates students/alumni joining in on committing to the highest standards of ethical behavior relating to the internship or job search process.
(h3)Career Services Access
The Office of Career Services has the ability to conduct searches on resumes and candidate profiles to notify candidates of educational or employment opportunities through email communications. By entering data into the Handshake system, students and alumni may have data included in aggregate reports used for evaluation of employment activities, educational programs, reports developed for institutional studies, and salary surveys.

If in doubt about sharing requested information with a Handshake employer, please consult the Office of Career Services.

By participating in resume books, students and alumni consent to the release of their resume and certain employment related information. Resumes are not shared with third parties, such as employment agencies or search firms.
