About Me and My Research:
I am generally interested in all areas of algebra and combinatorics. My main focus
is currently on enumerative and algebraic combinatorics and specifically on permutation
patterns and Coxeter groups. Other interests of mine include nonassociative algebra
(loops and quasigroups), and other group-like objects such as semigroups and Hopf
I completed my Ph.D. in June 2009 from the University of Denver under the supervision of Prof. Petr Vojtechovsky.
Your philosophy of teaching:
I believe in having an interactive classroom. Yes, I lecture some, but I also want my students to dig deep and solve problems in class and out. My goal is to show my students that mathematics is not only useful, but is also extremely beautiful, creative and a lot of fun.
Why did you decide to teach?
I originally went to school to study computer science and thought I wanted to be a programmer, but I kept taking math classes too. Eventually, I took my first course in abstract algebra and I was just hooked by mathematics. After thinking about it, I decided I didn't want to be a programmer, but wanted to show all of the beautiful mathematics that I was discovering to other people. I love teaching and couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.
After I graduated with my Ph.D. from the University of Denver, I was hired by Southeast and have worked here ever since. I started at Southeast in fall 2009, was named the Mathematics Graduate Program Coordinator in fall 2010, earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2014 and was named interim chairperson of the Department of Mathematics in January 2018.

Best advice for students
Come to mathematics with an open mind willing to work hard. Make friends with your classmates, form study groups, and spend time talking with people about mathematics.
