Follow the steps below to apply for admission as an undergraduate transfer student. International applicants who have completed any post-secondary education are considered undergraduate transfer students. We can't wait to see what you do!

Step 1: Email your supporting documents

To ensure efficiency and timely processing, please try to include all required documents in one email (per student) and provide the student's last name, first name and date of birth in the subject line.

Email international@semo.edu (or reply to the confirmation email you received after you submitted your online application) with a scanned copy of the following items:

  • Passport copy
    • Please include valid passport copies for all dependents listed on your application.
    • Passport must be valid at least six months beyond the intended program start date.
  • OFFICIAL academic transcripts 
    • Emailed transcripts are NOT official. Academic credential standards for transcripts to be official are detailed here. Please note that Transcripts must remain sealed as they were by the issuing educational institution. If your school does not seal their transcripts as a standard procedure, please request that they place your transcripts in a sealed envelope and stamp the outside flap with their school seal. Please do not open the envelope as this will void the transcripts. Please ensure you mail the transcripts by the deadline listed under Step 3 below.
    • NOTE: because you have post high school college credit, we CANNOT make a decision on your file until we receive your official transcripts.  
  • Affidavit of Financial Support and proof of finances (More Information)
    • Web-only students are not required to submit proof of finances.
  • Proof of English proficiency (or view other ways to demonstrate English Proficiency)
    • Emailed test scores are considered unofficial. Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to be official. 
  • Standardized test scores (ACT, SAT, etc.) for scholarship consideration (Optional)  
    • Emailed test scores are considered unofficial. Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to be official.
    • If you have standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), please submit the official test scores for placement purposes in English and Mathematics. Lack of official test scores may require you to take a placement exam. Kindly note that unofficial ACT/SAT test scores cannot be used for placement.  
  • If you are studying in the US, please submit the SEVIS Visa Status Verification Form. This form is a verification of your visa status, and not a request to transfer your SEVIS record to us. Please note that Southeast does NOT accept SEVIS record in terminated or completed status.

Step 2: Complete application

Submit your online application, pay the application fee, and submit all required documentation prior to the deadlines outlined here. 


Southeast can admit most first-time undergraduate and graduate applicants based on the submission of unofficial copies of their transcripts and test scores. However, official copies of all transcripts and test scores must be submitted prior to the deadlines listed below. If you were admitted to SEMO before you received your final transcripts/certificate, you must mail to our office the official transcripts that you sent via email as well as your official final transcripts/certificates by the deadlines listed above.

Non-degree seeking students (example: visiting, IEP) are not required to mail your official transcripts.

The deadlines listed above are not applicable to transfer students. Transfer students must submit official transcripts for admission and transfer credit review.

Returning students do not have to pay the $40 application fee or submit official transcripts from SEMO. All other requirements still apply. Please email international@semo.edu for specific requirements.

Step 4: English proficiency

Non-native speakers of English must prove an adequate level of English language proficiency for admission into an academic program. English language proficiency for admission can be demonstrated in one of the following ways. Demonstration of English proficiency must have been done within two years of the applicant’s intended program start date. Admitted students are not allowed to enroll in courses or claim scholarship benefits until all required official test scores have been received and processed. Emailed test scores are not considered official. Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to be official. 

Note: Students with less than 12-credit hours of U.S. higher education credit, or less than one-year full time credit from a non-U.S. institution will have to meet the New First-Time Undergraduate admission guidelines.

  1. Successful completion of Level 5 of Southeast’s IEP. IEP students with conditional admission seeking to matriculate to their academic programs must submit official test scores before the end of business day on the opening day of classes.
  2. English proficiency tests (Official scores must reported to Southeast Missouri State University):
    • TOEFL-minimum score of 61 iBT (examining minimum band scores)
    • IELTS-minimum overall band score of 5.5 (examining minimum band scores)
    • ITEP-minimum of 3.7
    • PTE Academic-minimum score of 45
    • Duolingo English Test-minimum score of 90
    • Kaplan International certified level Higher Intermediate
    • HOFT Institute Level 5
  3. Cumulative GPA of 2.25 (on 4.0 scale) or higher in 12 or more college-level credit hours from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education, including at least one college level non-ESL English course with an earned grade of C or higher.
  4. Cumulative GPA of 2.75 (on 4.0 scale) or higher on 24 or more college-level credit hours from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education.
  5. Cumulative U.S. equivalent GPA of 2.75 (on 4.0 scale) or higher for one year of full-time academic credit from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education where English language is the sole medium of instruction. Student’s transcript must include a non-ESL English course. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to verify the institution’s language of instruction.
  6. Other proof of English proficiency may be considered on an individual basis.

Transfer credit: A detailed evaluation of your previous academic coursework is conducted by the Office of the Registrar. This evaluation determines the credits that will transfer towards your degree at Southeast and a transfer GPA. This process can take 2-4 weeks. 

Scholarship: We will evaluate your eligibility for a merit scholarship based on this transfer GPA.
