Chris Beaty (Student Juried Show Judge)

March 5 - 18, 2026
Opening reception: March 5, 5 - 7 p.m.

Chris Beaty is a Chicago-based artist working primarily in painting and drawing.

His work explores fragmentation, perception, and the lived experience of ADHD through layered, nonlinear compositions that reflect both personal cognition and contemporary image culture. He earned his BFA from Southeast Missouri State University in 2016, where formative faculty mentorship continues to inform his practice and professional life, and his MFA from the University of Illinois in 2020. Fragments and Interruptions marks his return to SEMO, reflecting an ongoing dialogue between where his work began and where it continues to evolve. Beaty currently teaches courses as an adjunct faculty member at North Central College (Naperville), University of St. Francis (Joliet) and Saint Xavier University (Chicago)

Fragments and Interruptions brings together a series of oil paintings that examine how attention and perception are shaped through Beaty’s lived experience with ADHD. The works reflect a fragmented, nonlinear, and hyperattuned way of seeing that parallels the visual saturation of contemporary image culture. Built through layering and interruption, the paintings resist unified resolution. Interruption is treated not as a failure of focus, but as a generative structure that shapes how the work is seen.

Chris Beaty is also the juror for the Annual Juried Student Exhibition held in the Crisp Museum. He will give a juror’s talk on Wednesday, March 18 at noon in the museum.

March 6 - 27, 2026
Opening reception: March 6, 5 - 7 p.m.

Jon Daniels is a Missouri-based artist and art educator working in ink drawing and sculptural installation. He earned a B.S. in Art Education from Southeast Missouri State University in 2010. Rooted in a Midwestern upbringing, his work draws from memory and everyday objects to explore identity and emotional inheritance. Daniels works exclusively with Bic mechanical pencils and ink pens, embracing accessible materials as a core part of his practice. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the region.

According to the artist, in this exhibition, I chose to create familiar, everyday objects associated with each of my memories. These fragile, imperfect forms built out of paper and ink allude to the inconsistency of memory and how our perspective is allowed to change over time. Each piece holds traces of happiness, sadness, disappointment, nostalgia, and an overwhelming sense of uncertainty, mirroring how recollections themselves are built and rebuilt over time.

As each piece was created, I began to acknowledge the flaws and hurt within those moments while also recognizing the beauty and the growth they inspired. While the past remains unchanged, our relationship to it can evolve, influencing what we carry with us and what we choose to pass on. Emotional inheritance reveals itself as something active and ongoing, formed not only by what we receive, but by how we reshape it and carry it forward with intention.

March 6 - 27, 2026
Opening reception: March 6, 5 - 7 p.m.

Riley is a Senior, pursuing a BFA in Art with a specialization in Painting. Being from a small town, art was one of the only outlets that allowed her to break free from the limitations of words and express myself visually.

According to Riley, “Growing up in a small town has deeply influenced the way I see the world. There is a beauty there, but it is often hiding beneath routine, silence, and overlooked details. Weathered buildings, empty roads at dusk, peeling paint, rusted metal, and quiet fields may appear ordinary or even bleak at first glance, but they hold memories and carry stories with them. My work is rooted in this tension between surface and depth, between what is seen immediately and what is felt over time.

March 6 - 27, 2026
Opening reception: March 6, 5-7 p.m.

Zak Mayfield is pursuing a BFA in Art with a specialization in Painting. According to Mayfield, “A Creative Tree demonstrates the creativity within my family that I was surrounded by growing up. There are four generations of artists, craftsmen, and other creatives in my family. Beginning with my late great grandparents Tom and Betty Ross who were not artists by profession. Followed by my fraternal grandfather, Don Mayfield and my fraternal grandmother, Linda Ross Schorie, and her sister Beth Ross Scherer and Beth’s husband, David Scherer. Also included in the exhibition are my mother and father Jamie and Jeff Mayfield, and my sister Zoё Mayfield.

Throughout my life, my family has encouraged me to pursue my talents and dreams to become an artist. They have mentored me and helped me with all of my endeavors and as a thank you, I wanted to place the spotlight on them to thank them for the years of their continued support.”
