1. What is one thing you wish you had known about college before starting college?
I wish I had told myself not to act “too cool” to go to the freshman campus events. All the events Southeast plans for opening week to benefit the freshmen are there for just that: to benefit the freshmen! I wish I had gone to those events and been less nervous to talk to people I didn’t know.
2. Why should I live on campus instead of off-campus?
You make so many friends and memories on campus! I lived at the River Campus and loved being able to easily get to my classes and meet more people who were just like me! It is super inspiring to live with a bunch of people who are just as passionate about things as you!
3. How do you know what your major should be?
I changed my major pretty early into my freshman year. By taking a variety of courses, you can figure out what you like and don’t like, and pretty soon, you’ve got a major. Don’t be afraid to take different classes. You may find a major you love in the process.
4. What should I do if my classes are too hard?
College courses should challenge you and help you grow; however, if you’re really struggling, talk to your professor. They have in-person and virtual office hours (which are listed in the syllabus) and would be happy to give any extra help you may need. If you need more support, talk to someone in Tutorial Services, which offers free tutoring sessions in a variety of courses.
5. What is there to do in Cape Girardeau?
There is so much to do in Cape Girardeau! If you like the outdoors, the surrounding area is beautiful and full of hiking and walking trails. You should also head to Downtown Cape Girardeau to visit some awesome restaurants, go shopping, and walk by the Mississippi River.
6. What if I feel homesick when I go to college?
Find ways to make your dorm feel like home! I have my sorority’s letters up in mine because I love my sisters and they make me feel at home. I also have a bunch of decorations from Chicago, because I do miss my city sometimes! And you can always visit home. There’s an airport in Cape Girardeau and a train station less than an hour away but try to stay in Cape Girardeau as much as you can to make this place feel like a second home! That, plus finding great friends and a support system that’s there for me helped me adjust to being away from home. We also have a great counseling service on campus should you find yourself wanting to talk to someone, too!
7. How can I find a job after college?
Utilize the Office of Career Services! They are extremely helpful and can assist you in polishing your interview skills and resume. Attend Career Expos to meet future employers, and keep an eye on Handshake, since they have job postings for alumni. Also, take advantage of internships while you’re in college. You never know when one could turn into a job.
8. What is there to do on campus when I’m not in class?
Most students are only in class around 12-18 hours a week, so it’s a good thing that there are a lot of things happening on campus. Student organizations host small events throughout the semester, so keep an eye out to see when and where those events are happening. You can also work out at the Student Recreation Center or grab lunch at the University Center.
9. How can I make new friends at college?
The best way to make new friends at college is to put yourself out there. Don’t be afraid to join student organizations or get involved in the community. Talk to your peers in your classes. I have some fantastic friends that I wouldn’t have made otherwise. And, just be yourself. College is a wonderful opportunity to meet so many new people, so keep an open mind and say, “Hi!”
10. What’s the best thing about going to SEMO?
It’s hard to choose just one thing, but I think that the best thing about SEMO is the people. The faculty and staff are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable, which makes the transition to college so much easier. The students and community are also friendly and welcoming, and it didn’t take long before SEMO became my home away from home.
