If you want some wisdom when it comes to studying for your first college finals, you’ve come to the right place. Pull up a chair, get out some paper, and prepare to be amazed.
Know When Your Finals Are
Take it from us: you’re going to want to be on time for your finals. But how do you know when your finals are? Aren’t they at the same time as your regular class? We’re glad you asked. Here’s the answer: the start time of your final may differ from that of your class. Check the final examination schedule posted on the registrar’s website. You can find out what day to take your final based on the start time and meeting dates of the course.
Make a Plan
Studying for finals takes time. Make sure you manage your time well by prioritizing what material you need to study more. You should also try to start studying for finals a few weeks before your actual tests. While procrastinating sounds like a good idea at the time, your brain (and grades) will thank you when you’ve studied more than just the night before.
Visit Your Professor’s Office Hours
What is one of the best resources regarding your course material? Your professor! Don’t be afraid to ask for help or clarification if you need it. Your professor’s office hours should be listed in the syllabus, so swing by to make sure you understand the material before the exam.
Try Different Study Methods
Ever heard the saying “different strokes for different folks?” It also applies to studying. What works for your friends may or may not work for you, so be sure to try a few study tactics and see what sticks. Try using flashcards, studying with a group, answering practice questions in your textbook, or reciting the material out loud.
Give Yourself Breaks
While studying non-stop may sound like a way to remember everything, you need to give yourself time to relax. Try catching up on your favorite Netflix show, walking through campus with your friends, or grabbing some Burrito-Ville for lunch; just make sure that you aren’t burning yourself out.
Get Some Sleep
This one goes hand-in-hand with our previous point, but it’s important. Making sure you are alert and ready when sitting down for your final is crucial. And while getting a full eight hours of sleep may not be possible, it’s probably better to have more than two.
Get Some Fuel
You’re going to need some brain power to help get you through finals week; why not grab some friends and then grab some food at Late Night Breakfast at Towers? A wonderful Southeast tradition, Late Night Breakfast gives you a much-needed break keep you powering through your studying.
Good Luck on Your Finals, Redhawks!
