Cognitive Stimulation Therapy
Continue to main contentCognitive Stimulation Therapy uses an evidence-based protocol which has been used for those at risk or diagnosed with mild-moderate dementia.
Reminiscence, multisensory, and implicit learning approaches are employed to stimulate language, executive functioning, information retrieval, orientation, and memory.
This client-centered care focuses on maintaining and improving emotional, relational, and social skills. Funded by the Cape Girardeau County Senior Tax Grant, the program meets immediate needs of senior adults secondary to COVID-19 isolation. Individuals at risk for or already experiencing cognitive decline are able to connect, engage, and access resources safely, in a socially distant format.
Two hours of group therapy and enrichment activities will be provided once a week for individuals over 60 years of age, living in Cape Girardeau County. The first hour of the program will be focused on group Cognitive Stimulation Therapy provided by graduate speech-language pathology students. The second hour will provide informative, interactive seminars on various topics related to cognition, aging, health, health literacy, and exercise.
Individuals can use a tablet, smartphone, or computer to access the virtual Zoom meeting from any location. For those with limited access to technology, the Center will provide individual treatment rooms for use. Transportation is available with COVID-19 precautions in place. Please contact Amy Herren at (573) 651-2050 for more information.
