Southeast Missouri State University is celebrating International Education week Nov. 13-17 with a number of events highlighting study abroad and international opportunities within the institution.
“Studying abroad is a transformative aspect of the college experience for students of all backgrounds,” said Aven Anderson, study abroad coordinator. “It goes beyond academics. It’s about developing a global mindset crucial in today’s interconnected world.”
The Office of International Education and Services (OIES) is hosting a number of events. On Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., they will host Taste of the World on the third floor of the University Center. This event is free and will feature samples of food dishes from around the globe.
On Nov. 15 at noon, Southeast Study Abroad will host a panel. Here, students will share their study abroad experiences and share information about programs and academics. Light refreshments will be served.
“Those who take their studies overseas develop a deeper empathy for others,” said Hailey Leonard, international student counselor. “They also become more aware of global issues, and their ability to connect with different cultures evolves them into an even greater member of society.”
Nov. 16 from 6 – 8 p.m., International Education will host Bollywood Movie Night at the International Village.
On Nov. 17, campus will celebrate International Fashion Day. Students are asked to wear cultural attire to class, and then will gather in Academic Hall at noon for a group picture.
“Our goal is to inform the Southeast population about all the student-hosted and OIES-hosted events to encourage participation outside of just the international groups,” said Leonard. “We are hoping that doing this in the future will create a booming community of intermingled students.”
International Education Week (IEW) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State is part of the efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and to attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States.
The Southeast Office of International Education and Services offers help for international students with admissions and services, study abroad, and the Intensive English Program. Southeast Study Abroad offers opportunities for students from all majors in more than 35 countries, with trips ranging from a few weeks to semester and academic year-long programs.
