Continue to main contentWith most classes out and students gone for the summer, you would think campus would be quiet. But once the spring semester comes to a close, for the Facilities Management crews, it's an all hands on deck race to ready campus for the spring semester, just three short months away.
Some may take it for granted, as they drive by campus, that our grounds are always so pristine. The grass meticulously cared for, the trees and shrubs perfectly manicured, even small details such as decorated pole banners and needed repairs made to parking areas.
Facilities Management makes it looks so easy we often forget how important these little details are. Even more, we may not fully understand the amount of work and upkeep it requires. Let's not forget, much of this work is done outdoors, regardless of the temperature or the elements, our staff is still working on everything from pest control, maintaining athletic and intramural fields, cleaning gutters, replacing lights, paint touch-ups, and much more!

Construction Projects
Although there are some daily maintenance items required of the Facilities Management staff members, there are also days they can't predict what may come their way. For example, during the summer, they may find themselves cleaning dorm rooms to prepare for camps that occur on campus, or changing out air filters to ensure each building is passing clean and cool air. They even plan out their schedule a year in advance to ensure nothing is overlooked, which also allows them some flexibility if something unexpected comes up: like sleet!
When speaking with a few of the team members, they said that mindfulness is the most important thing to have in their career. So the next time you're driving through campus, take a moment to look around and remember that our Facilities Management team is hard at work (even quietly behind the scenes) to make our university a place of beauty and pride.
