Southeast Missouri State University’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) initiative can convert student work experiences into college credits for adult learners pursuing a college degree. Students with military, law enforcement or nursing credentials, management portfolios, certifications or licenses can earn credit for college courses comparative to their experience.
"Empowering our students by recognizing their real-world expertise through additional credit hours is important, especially for those balancing work with professional commitments," said Chelsea McNeely, the director of Southeast Online. "This not only validates their hard-earned accomplishments but moves them closer to realizing their educational goals."
The PLA program gives students the chance to reduce time to degree, which saves money. Completing one simple form at semo.edu/pla begins the process to determine what and how many courses your experience could qualify for. SEMO partners with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), whose research shows that adult learners who earn PLA credits are more likely to earn their bachelor’s degree, than those who do not.
"At Southeast, we are dedicated to streamlining the academic journey for our students," said McNeely. "With all of these options, we help nontraditional learners leverage their existing expertise and get their degrees faster."
Southeast also accelerates the path to graduation with its Credit by Exam program, where students can accrue credits via examinations. These credits can count towards general education, major, minor, or elective prerequisites, offering more flexibility. Students interested in PLA can contact pla@semo.edu for more details.
