Southeast Missouri State University’s campus stays busy each summer with a wide variety of camps and activities for kids in the community.
“Summer camps are really when we get to have fun,” said Ricky Reed, camps and conferences coordinator for Southeast Recreational Services. “Kids get to explore what it’s like being at Southeast, and our departments get to share activities, knowledge, and learning experiences. It’s an exciting time on campus.”
Camp Redhawk is a summer camp hosted by the University that’s geared toward incoming first-year students getting ready to start at SEMO this fall. It is a four day, three night experience that introduces campus life and traditions, immerses soon-to-be students in school spirit, and makes connections before the start of the school year.
“Camp Redhawk is a really unique way to kick off your undergraduate experience at SEMO,” said Michele Irby, director of Campus Life and Event Services. “You get to meet other freshmen and get comfortable with everything before actually starting classes. Plus, it’s just a fun and relaxing way to start your next chapter.”
Redhawks Kids Camp (RKC) is for children in grades 1-6 and includes games, activities, swimming, field trips, crafts, and more. The camps run Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and there are 11 sessions available. Registration is open until spots are filled.
There are a number of Redhawk Athletic Camps this summer for nearly every sport. Camps run in June and July and will take place on campus with Redhawk coaching staff. Each sport has individual dates, prices, and information listed on their camp pages.
Southeast also hosts National Cheerleader Association camps on campus over the summer. Those campus take place in July.
Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will host a STEM on CAMPus June 4 – 7 at Southeast. This camp allows Scouts to explore campus life while also learning from various experiences and activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Holland College of Arts and Media is offering a variety of summer music classes for kids. These include piano lessons for kids, beginning guitar classes, plus instrumental and choral ensemble options. There are also summer opportunities available for those wishing to enroll in the Music Academy.
New this summer, SEMO Esports is offering summer camps for junior high- and high school- aged students. These one-day camps will offer opportunities for those who want to better themselves as a gaming competitor or simply just have a fun day in the SEMO Esports arena playing video games. Registration is limited to 20 campers per day to ensure equipment and instruction for all campers. There will be two different sessions this summer, one on June 23 and one on July 21.
“We are so excited to add the SEMO Esports camps,” Reed said. “Esports is growing in popularity and this offers kids from around our area a chance to come learn and compete. It’s just one more part of a very full and exciting summer.”
