Southeast Missouri State University’s Holland College of Arts and Media will host ”Celebrate the Arts,” a fundraiser May 5 to support Southeast students’ national and international performance opportunities.
“When the River Campus opened in 2007, we envisioned expanded collaborations across the arts -- this performance realizes that dream,” said Rhonda Weller Stilson, dean of the Holland College of Arts and Media. “It will delight audiences of all ages, and has something for everyone. ‘Celebrate the Arts’ will showcase the amazing talents of student and faculty artists from the Department of Music, The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Art and Design.”
“Celebrate the Arts” is also being held in conjunction with the ARTrageous Auction. This online auction features recycled Yamaha guitars transformed into works of art by students, faculty and guest artists. Proceeds from the art sale and ARTrageous Auction will benefit the newly opened River Campus Arts Complex, located at 340 S. Frederick St.
Art sales and demonstration will begin at 5 p.m. in the Glenn Convocation Center, followed by performances at 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.
Audiences will enjoy a variety of entertainment:
- Jazz Studio Ensemble performance, including “Huntin’ Wabbits” by Gordon Goodwin.
- Musical theatre vocal selections, including “Waiting for Life” from the musical “Once on this Island.”
- Operatic vocal pieces from both Puccini and Leoncavallo.
- Aerial, contemporary and ballet pieces choreographed by Southeast students and faculty.
- Instrumental solos and quartets, including percussion, winds and strings.
Additionally, the Southeast Steel Drum Band and Jazz Combo will delight during the art sale/demonstrations beginning at 5:30 p.m. both indoors and outside the Cultural Arts Center.
Patrons will find additional donated art created by Department of Art and Design faculty at the event. The ARTrageous Auction runs through May 7 at 9 p.m. Online auction items will be available to preview on May 5 from 5-7 p.m. at the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp Museum.
“Celebrate the Arts” is sponsored by Saint Francis Healthcare.
