The Regents heard a report on the condition of the University’s utility tunnels from Bob Daugherty, professional engineer and associate with KPFF Consulting Engineers, and Erich Blaufuss, professional engineer and director of Bernhard TME. KPFF Consulting Engineers recently completed an assessment of the University’s utility tunnel system, which includes 66 tunnels extending two miles under the campus. KPFF assessed the structural conditions of the tunnels and the utility lines running through them. Dougherty and Blaufuss reviewed the 11 tunnels in most critical need of repairs. The estimated cost of repairing these 11 tunnels is $8.5 million to $11.8 million, depending on the scope of repairs to be made. Water infiltration, structural deterioration due to age, poor ventilation and lighting were among the common themes highlighted.
