Louise Bodenheimer is Professor and Area Head in Graphic and Interactive Design at Southeast Missouri State University

Bodenheimer considers “hybrid” to be an accurate description of her art practice.

"Hybrid is a collection of selected previous and recent design, illustration and other works that reflect my interests in multiple expressions of imagery. My background with MFA’s in painting and graphic design have fostered this blending that I have had for a number of years. “Hybrid” is an accurate description of my art practice. The media I explore is usually mixed: watercolor, pen and ink, marker, color pencil, and metallic pen, on Arches paper, vellum or board in addition to digital applications that are usually required in my design work." Bodenheimer states.

"I tend to work fast and these materials help me stay in sync with what my brain (which can be quite busy with its own 3-ring circus landscape) is processing. The final stages of my works are much slower, with adjustments and finishing touches carefully executed."

"There is a lot of emotion behind the works I create. I achieve this with the use of contrasts, color, writing and being honest with what I want to say, which can feel a bit risky at times. I try to respond to inspiration with some discretionary judgment, but not too much, because I believe that can be restrictive to the point that the work becomes dishonest and too focused on what will the audience think."

"It was absolute joy to pull these works together, as a sort of historical timeline of growth. I hope that viewers will leave the exhibition with something special for them."

Louise Bodenheimer will lead a workshop September 22, 9 a.m.-Noon for ages 16 and up. Zentangles in Marker requires preregistration and a $10 for all participants.
