Visiting Chinese Scholars
Continue to main contentOpen Invitation to Chinese Scholars to Visit the Faulkner Center
The Faulkner Center extends an invitation to Chinese Faulkner scholars living in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong who would benefit from an extended period of study and research related to William Faulkner.
Visiting scholars will be granted Visiting Research Scholar status and will study Faulkner with Professor Christopher Rieger, the director of the Center for Faulkner Studies, and Professor Emeritus Robert W. Hamblin, the Founding Director of the Center for Faulkner Studies. The scholars will also have the opportunity to visit classes in American literature taught by various members of the English Department, as well as participate in a number of cultural exchange activities. Scholars will travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to view Faulkner’s hometown which provides the setting of his novels and stories.
While Southeast Missouri State University is unable to provide any financial support to the visiting Chinese scholars, the University will help the scholars obtain a visa and travel forms, waive all normal academic fees, provide office and study space, and assist in locating housing on or adjacent to the campus.
How to Apply
Chinese Faulkner scholars interested in spending several weeks or months at the Faulkner Center should send a resumé and a one-page study/research proposal via electronic mail to cfs@semo.edu. For more information contact Dr. Christopher Rieger at crieger@semo.edu.
History and Accomplishments
Since 2005 more than twenty Chinese scholars from the People's Republic of China have visited the Center for Faulkner Studies—for periods ranging from three to twelve months—to study the works of William Faulkner and to conduct research in the Louis Daniel Brodsky Collection of Faulkner materials.
Dr. Kang Yi, Dr. Wang Lili, and Dr. Bai Jing are translating, “Faulkner and Morrison,” an essay collection from Southeast Missouri State University’s Faulkner Conference, into Chinese with the intentions of distributing to scholars in the People’s Republic of China.
