Many Redhawks start off being undecided in college. It’s perfectly okay – and normal – to not know what career you want to pursue.
All that matters is taking that first step and applying to college. You can figure out everything else once you're here. In the meantime, here is some advice and encouragement.
There are plenty of options.
SEMO is an undecided student’s dream school because of the number of majors here. Check out our programs page to find career paths you hadn’t even considered. Maybe you’ll come across one that feels right to follow.
See something you’re interested in? Check the degree map to see which courses you should take as an undecided student to test the waters or reach out to a faculty member in that program.
We have people for that.
Career Services is a team dedicated to helping you find the correct major. While no one is going to tell you what to pick, our career counselors can help you make sense of what you’re looking for and where your skills fit. Meeting with a career counselor one-on-one is always free. All you have to do is schedule an appointment.
Switching your major is more common than you think.
Take comfort in the fact that many SEMO students change their major at least once after applying. Even students who planned out their lives in elementary school sometimes find themselves switching lanes after a few classes. Luckily, declaring a major isn’t a lifelong commitment unless you want it to be. Academic Advising is ready to assist when you’re looking for guidance.
Ready to declare your major now, or want to take a look at the steps?
You’ll learn things you might not have.
There’s a reason we call it “exploratory.” You may develop a skill that will strengthen your resume or create bonds with people you wouldn’t have met. Not everyone’s path is linear; that’s what sets us apart. Own your journey.
You have time.
Most programs have a little wiggle room built in, so you can still finish your degree within four years even if you aren’t choosing a major on day one. It’s not pertinent that you know where you’re heading as long as you don’t remain completely directionless. Being an undecided major when starting college still requires you to make a plan - even if the two steps are just picking out interesting classes and attending them.
Try not to stress. Enjoy your time exploring. Your major is patiently waiting for you to find it.
