Impact the world with politics, policy, and the law. This is where you find your fearless.

Political science at Southeast Missouri State University is about more than understanding government—it’s about learning how to communicate ideas, navigate global perspectives, and lead in an interconnected world.

The Bachelor of Arts in political science focuses on government, international relations, public administration, and political theory, while building strong language and communication skills that prepare you for careers across cultures and borders.

Our students gain real-world experience through internships with local, state, and federal officials and go on to careers in government, campaigns, research, and international affairs.

What Can You Do With a Political Science Degree?

As a political science major at SEMO, you’ll explore national and international issues while building the skills to communicate effectively, think critically, and lead with confidence.

You’ll learn in small, discussion-based classes led by faculty who are deeply invested in your success, giving you the opportunity to engage with big ideas and real-world challenges in a meaningful way.

Along the way, you can:

  • Get involved in student organizations like the Political Science Club, Political Theory Club, and Pi Sigma Alpha honor society

  • Gain hands-on experience through internships, practicums, and professional conferences

  • Participate in Model United Nations and other global simulations

  • Prepare for graduate school or law school, including the LSAT

The BA pathway is especially suited for students who want to expand their language skills and global perspective. Through two years of a foreign language (or equivalent), you’ll develop cultural awareness and communication skills that are highly valued in international careers, law, diplomacy, and public service.

Whether your goal is to work in government, pursue law school, or engage in global policy and advocacy, you’ll graduate prepared to make an impact.

BA or BS: Choosing the Path That's Right for You

SEMO offers two political science degree options, allowing you to choose the academic path that best matches your interests and strengths.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) focuses on statistics and quantitative analysis, helping students develop skills in research, data interpretation, and policy analysis. This option is a great fit for students interested in political research, campaign strategy, public administration, or data-driven decision-making.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) includes two years of Spanish (or the equivalent), strengthening language and communication skills that are valuable in international relations, law, diplomacy, and global careers.

Both programs share the same core political science coursework, meaning students in either track receive the same strong foundation in the discipline. Graduates from both programs pursue the same types of careers, law schools, and graduate programs—the difference simply allows you to choose whether you prefer focusing on analytics or language skills as part of your degree.

Erika Bone ’20

I want to work in my career field because of the ability to hear people’s concerns and be able to do something about it. I know most people seem to have a negative connotation when it comes to anything political, but I think it should be just the opposite. There are so many different career options within the field that it is more diverse than people realize.
