Liz Coffey: Transition Spaces 17.1 opens Friday, July 7, in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus. The public is invited to view the exhibition beginning July 7. An opening reception will be held from 4-8 p.m. that evening. The exhibit will remain on display through Aug. 20. Admission is free. Coffey examines the positive, elusive moments of awe and the struggle of dealing with mental and monetary barriers. Her paintings allow each artwork to become a conversation with a symbol. Inevitably, this abstracted symbol builds upon itself and references not one thing, but many. “Recently this conversation has circled around my weaknesses that I tend to avoid addressing directly,” Coffey said. “The areas of small, careful mark-making and quiet, cool-toned palettes are reflections of my default idealism. Rather than chosen specifically, they return to all of my artwork as a result of trusting my intuition. Even when dealing with negative experiences, I retain and want to share a spark of optimism.” Coffey received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from Southeast in 2012. She has exhibited her work in locations throughout the Midwest, most notably at the St. Louis Artists Guild, the McDonough Museum of Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the Firehouse Gallery in Baton Rouge Louisiana, and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The Crisp Museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 1-4 p.m. on weekends and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of the month. For more information, call (573) 651-2260 or email museum@semo.edu.
