Southeast Marketing Students Win in State DECA Competition

Five Southeast Missouri State University Collegiate DECA students won high honors in the 2017 Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference and Competition Feb. 23-24 in Lake Ozark, Missouri. Jared Banning of Salem, Illinois, won first place in the Accounting business simulation.  Also, Lydia Corneal of Herscher, Illinois, won third place in the Accounting business simulation, while Hannah Gordon of Englewood, Colorado, won third place in the Restaurant and Food Service business simulation.  Blake Henson of O’Fallon, Missouri, won second place in the Travel and Tourism business simulation, and Damon Washington of Chesterfield, Missouri, won first place in the Professional Prepared Business Presentation. In addition, several of the Southeast Collegiate DECA competitors were proficiency winners in their events, for superior performance in their case studies and marketing exam. This year’s proficiency winners include: Banning, Accounting business simulation; Corneal, Human Resource Management case study and Accounting business simulation; Corneal and Gordon, Business Ethics case study; Dmitri Kozak of St. Peters, Missouri, and Collin Kloeppel of Union, Missouri, Business Ethics case study; Kozak, Human Resource Management case study; Washington, Professional Prepared Business Presentation; Cameron Horn of Warrensburg, Missouri, Accounting business simulation; Henson, Travel and Tourism business simulation; Gordon, Restaurant and Food Service business simulation; and Kloeppel, Retail Management business simulation. Also, Corneal won honors for the high score on the Accounting and Finance Exam. As part of its commitment to experiential learning, the Department of Management and Marketing in the Harrison College of Business has sponsored Collegiate DECA for several years, and each year sends numerous participants to the state and international competitions. In the Spring 2017 semester, membership has remained steady with just over 24 members, once again making the Southeast Collegiate DECA chapter among the largest in the state of Missouri.
