39th Annual High School Art Exhibition Opens Feb. 12 at Crisp Museum

Beginning Feb. 12, the “Exhibiting Excellence: 39th Annual High School Art Exhibition,” an invitational juried art exhibit for 11th and 12th grade students in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois, will be displayed in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus. An opening reception, featuring the unveiling of this year’s exhibit, will be held from 2-4 p.m. Feb. 12, with an awards ceremony beginning at 3 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through March 19, and admission is free. “High school art instructors from this region have submitted the finest original works by their students for jurying,” said Peter Nguyen, Museum director. First, second and third place awards will be presented in the categories of sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media, photography, fibers, drawing and painting. Additionally, there is an Art Academy Award and Best of Show Award. The recipient of the Art Academy Award will receive a scholarship to attend one of the University’s Summer Art Academy workshops, and the recipient of the Best in Show Award will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Southeast as an art major. This year’s juror will be Dr. Barbara Bickel, associate professor of art education and director of women, gender and sexuality studies at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. She received her doctorate in art education from The University of British Columbia, Canada, and her bachelor’s degree in painting from the University of Calgary, Canada. Bickel’s art, teaching and research interests include arts-based inquiry methods, collaboration, socially engaged art, the body, connective aesthetics, spirituality, feminism, women’s leadership, feminist arts-based pedagogy and restorative and transformative learning. Her art and performance rituals have been exhibited and performed in the United States and Canada since 1991. She is a co-founder of the Gestare Art Collective, and recently co-edited a book entitled “Arts-Based Research and Contemplative Practices in Research and Teaching.” She is the editor-in-chief of the international book series “Arts Based Educational Research.” Her articles on arts-based inquiry and artography have been published in numerous journals and book chapters.
