IT Warns of Email Phishing Schemes

Over the last few days, the University has experienced a surge in email phishing attacks asking students and employees to renew their Southeast account. In addition, a new variant of ransomware (like the WannaCry outbreak) is currently infecting systems across the world. The first wants to steal your login information; the second wants to encrypt your computer; and both start with a simple email message asking you to click a link, login to a site or open a document. What can you do?

In addition, a new variant of ransomware (like the WannaCry outbreak) is currently infecting systems across the world. The first wants to steal your login information; the second wants to encrypt your computer; and both start with a simple email message asking you to click a link, login to a site or open a document. What can you do?
- Be careful and skeptical. Southeast will never send you an email asking you to verify your password or to confirm your account.
- If you don’t know what’s in a document or why you received it, don’t open it.
- Contact the Information Technology (IT) Help Desk at (573) 651-4357 and ask about a suspicious email message.
