Concert Band, Wind Symphony Performing 'The Hounds of Spring' May 2

The Southeast Missouri State University Concert Band and Wind Symphony will present the final concert of the 2016-2017 Music Ensembles Series with “The Hounds of Spring” concert on Tuesday, May 2, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University. This concert features a wide variety of musical selections and features the work of the instrumental music students in the Holland School for the Visual and Performing Arts. The Concert Band will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature American and Celtic folksongs, a set of theme and variations on Dona Nobis Pacem (translated ‘give us peace’) and a fast galop typical of circus music. The performance selections will include “American Folk Rhapsody,” “Celtic Song and Celebration,” “Polly Oliver,” “Thematic Variations on Dona Nobis Pacem,” “A Galop to End All Galops,” “Prelude in C,” “Lídia,” “Jig from St. Paul Suite” and “John Williams: Evening at Pops.” The conductor of the Concert Band and Wind Symphony is Dr. Martin Reynolds, director of bands. The program title “The Hounds of Spring” is the title of one of the Wind Symphony selections. Composed in 1981, the composer Alfred Reed was inspired by the dramatic poem, “Atalanta in Calydon” by Algernon Charles Swinburne. The Wind Symphony will also feature various segments or sections of the group on smaller, chamber music works by Boury, Holst, and George Hamilton Green. Joshua Whalen, a music composition student, will also have a world premiere performance of his work, “For God So Loved the World”. The program will conclude with a medley of film score and Olympic event selections by master composer John Williams. “I am pleased to share the stage with talented students that aspire to be creative artists and that work very hard to be effective musical communicators,” Reynolds said. The general public, faculty, staff and entire University community are invited to join us for the closing event of the 2016-2017 Musical Ensembles Series.
