Southeast Art Faculty Exhibition Opening April 7 at Catapult

Catapult Creative House will host a reception from 5-9 p.m. Friday, April 7, marking the opening of an exhibit featuring works by the art faculty of Southeast Missouri State University. The Southeast Art Faculty Exhibition will remain on display through April 27 at Catapult Creative House at 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Among those exhibiting their work will be Louise Bodenheimer, Emily Booth, Emily Denlinger, Dr. Joni Hand, Benjie Hue, Carol Horst, Caroline Kahler, Justin Henry Miller, Joshua Newth, Hannah March Sanders, Kathy Smith and Chris Wubbena. Professor Bodenheimer is the graphic design and illustration professor in Southeast’s Department of Art. She has exhibited her illustration/artwork work in solo and group shows regionally and nationally. Her professional graphic design work, along with that of her students, has received various awards through the American Advertising Federation in the tri-state area. Instructor Booth is a Foundations instructor in the Department of Art. She exhibits her work nationally in solo, juried and invitational exhibitions. Booth is the coordinator of the international travel for the Department of Art. Associate Professor Denlinger serves as the area head of Digital Art. Denlinger regularly exhibits her artwork nationally in juried and solo exhibitions. Assistant Professor Hand teaches art history. She has several publications, including “Women, Manuscripts, and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350-1550” (Ashgate, 2013) and “Bound for the Midwest: Medieval and Early Modern Religious Manuscripts in the Charles Luce Harrison Collection,” Kent Library, Southeast Missouri State University (Southeast Missouri State University Press, 2017). Hand is a practicing artist and regularly exhibits her artwork regionally. Professor Heu is professor of ceramics. His artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally in juried, invitational and solo exhibitions. He conducts visiting artist workshops and residencies of his ceramics at universities and institutions across the United States. Instructor Horst serves as the area head of the Department of Art Education, the coordinator of the University’s Art Academy, Art Reach and High School Art Exhibit. Horst regularly presents at numerous state and regional art education conferences and is a practicing exhibiting artist. Professor Kahler became chair of the Department of Art in fall of 2011. She also serves as a part-time faculty member, working with 11 full-time artists and educators. In her role as chair, she has been working to lead the department on the path to accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Associate Professor Miller serves as the area head of painting. Additionally, he is the gallery coordinator for the River Campus Art Gallery. Aside from his teaching, Miller is a practicing artist who regularly exhibits his artwork nationally. He is represented by Zg Gallery in Chicago, Illinois. Instructor Newth teaches foundations courses at Southeast. He has exhibited nationally at the Toledo Museum of Art, Louisiana State University, Tampa Museum of Art and Hockaday Museum. Newth’s paintings and drawings express an affinity for nature and an exploration of the idea of beauty in the ordinary. Assistant Professor March Sanders serves as the area head of printmaking. She is also the letterpress area coordinator of Catapult Press. Sanders is managing editor of the Mid America Print Council Journal. She has exhibited work in group exhibitions across the globe in Estonia, Ireland, Japan, and New York. Professor Smith is the foundations coordinator. She regularly exhibits in regional, national and international venues, including past exhibitions in Lyons, France, Tokyo, Japan, Manchester, England, and Vancouver, British Columbia. She has exhibited in galleries in New York City such as the Gaia Gallery, Viridian Gallery, Williamsburg Historical Museum, as well as SOHO 20. She has been a member of Viridian, an artists’ cooperative gallery since 1998. Professor Wubbena is the area head of sculpture. His exhibition record includes indoor and outdoor exhibitions throughout the United States. Wubbena also has been awarded various grants for the completion of larger projects, such as “de minimis series” completed with support from a Mississippi Arts Commission Visual Arts Fellowship with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
