Hartnett Selected as 2017-2018 Editor of the Arrow

Southeast Missouri State University junior Kara Hartnett has been selected as the 2017-2018 editor of the Arrow, the University's award-winning student-run newspaper, which began at Southeast in 1911. Hartnett, of Metamora, Illinois, currently serves as the Arrow's digital managing editor and is double majoring in multimedia journalism and global studies (Spanish emphasis.) Her other activities include chapter president of the Society of Professional Journalists and membership in Delta Delta Delta sorority. “I am really looking forward to being able to serve the Southeast community as the editor of the Arrow,” Hartnett said. “I want to focus on improving the paper as a whole and creating a professional, hands-on learning environment for all the students involved in our production.” Hartnett was selected after a competitive group interview process involving Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck, who is the Arrow faculty adviser and multimedia journalism coordinator in the Department of Mass Media, as well as the leadership team from Rust Communications, which has partnered with the University to help operate the newspaper since 2011. “Kara is a great choice for the Arrow. She is a passionate, motivated and strong leader who we hope will take the Arrow to the next level,” said Logan Young, who serves as the content adviser and is the features editor at the Southeast Missourian. The Arrow has won numerous state and national awards since the partnership's establishment, including the Missouri College Media Association's Best in State award in 2014. Earlier this month, the Arrow won a second-place Best News Delivery award at the National Spring College Media Convention in New York. Arrow editors produce a weekly printed product, along with content on their regularly updated website, southeastarrow.com.
