Dugger Lecture to Focus on How World War I Influenced Mental Health Policy

Dr. Annessa Stagner, dean of academic services at Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colorado, will present 'Coming to Terms with Failure: The Story of American Medicine and Shell Shock' at the 2017 Harold Holmes Dugger Lecture at 7:30 p.m. March 30 in the University Center Ballroom at Southeast Missouri State University. The event is free and open to the public. The lecture will examine how the events of World War I came to influence policy-making in the realm of military mental health. Stagner has centered her historical scholarship on shell-shocked soldiers of World War I. She is the author of “Healing a Soldier, Restoring the Nation: Representations of Shell Shock in the United States during and after the First World War” and “Making Broken Bodies Whole in a Shell-Shocked World.” The Harold Holmes Dugger lecture series was established by the Southeast Department of History in 1988 to honor Dr. Harold Holmes Dugger, professor of diplomatic and intellectual history and former chair of the department. The series focuses on topics within Dugger's areas of teaching and professional interest, and is sponsored by the Department of History and the Dugger family.
