Children’s Musical Theatre Workshop to Study Acting and Singing at the River Campus

Children interested in musical theatre are invited to study singing, dancing and acting using the stories of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Alice in Wonderland” in March and April at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus. The Children’s Theatre Workshop is for students in kindergarten-8 grade, and children of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend. Classes include physical and vocal warm-ups, and character-building exercises. Students will find their voice and gain self-confidence in this artistic environment. The classes will run Saturdays from March 4 to April 8, with the exception of March 18, and will be held in the acting and directing studio of the Kenneth and Jeanine Dobbins River Campus Center. Snacks will be provided. “These workshops provide opportunities for children to explore performance and learn about great musicals in a fun environment,” said Rhonda Weller-Stilson, director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Southeast alumna Megan Walton Steck, who has previously worked with the Summer Theatre and Dance Academy, the Summer Arts Festival and other children’s workshops, will teach the classes. Space is limited. The deadline to register is March 2. The cost of each workshop is $150. Students will learn songs, scenes and dances of memorable characters and tunes. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to noon. A final performance for friends and family will be held on April 8. “Alice in Wonderland” (5th-8th Grades) In this workshop, based on the classic novels written by Lewis Carroll, students follow Alice on her journey as she chases the white rabbit down the rabbit hole. Students will learn scenes work. Classes will run from 1-4 p.m. A final performance for friends and family will be held on April 8.
