01/23/2017
Southeast Missouri State University’s Catapult Creative House announces the opening of “Public Sculpture: The Art of the Proposal” on Friday, Feb. 3. Public art is a growing entrepreneurial and expressive outlet that enlivens communities and alters everyday experiences by changing the visual landscape within public areas. Curated by Chris Wubbena, sculpture professor at Southeast Missouri State University, “Public Sculpture: The Art of the Proposal” consists of a collection of maquettes and digital prints of public sculpture proposals. The exhibition brings together a range of artists working in various materials at different points of their careers, from sculptors working in public sculpture for 50 years to younger artists just beginning their journey into public art. The exhibition provides a glimpse into the process of public sculpture proposals and allows the viewer to consider the potential of public art in their community. Artists included in the exhibition are from Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, West Virginia, Georgia and Florida. For questions regarding the exhibition or the invited artists, please contact Wubbena at cwubbena@semo.edu. An opening reception is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Catapult Gallery. Guests are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facilities, including the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art students’ studios upstairs. The exhibition runs from Feb. 3 through March 30. Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau. Catapult Creative House hours are Tuesday through Saturday 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
