CACREP is the programmatic accreditor of counseling education programs at colleges and universities in the United States. The accreditation process incorporates the programs’ self-assessment and peer review to ensure they are meeting CACREP standards in six sections, including academic quality, curriculum, and professional practice. Before being reaccredited, a team of CACREP reviewers also visit the University to validate the self-study through interviews, visits to classrooms, internship and practicum sites, and document review.

“CACREP accreditation provides recognition that the education offered by a program has completed extensive peer-evaluation process and meets standards established by, and for, the counseling profession,” said Dr. Jan Ward, professor in the Department of Psychology and Counseling at SEMO. “Students can be assured that all requisite knowledge and skill areas will be included in the courses of study necessary for entry into the field.”

SEMO’s mental health and school counseling graduate programs have both been CACREP accredited for more than 20 years, displaying ongoing excellence and commitment to upholding high program standards. They are two of 17 CACREP accredited programs in Missouri.

Dr. Andy Siebert, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Counseling at SEMO, says accreditation is important for students regardless of where they end up practicing.

“CACREP accredits across the U.S.,” said Siebert. “This accreditation ensures education and training portability by providing evidence-based interventions that are consistent with accredited programs across the nation.”

Accreditation is important for students who aspire to become licensed therapists or counselors, since most licenses require attending an accredited program.
