Southeast Missouri State University’s Kent Library hosted the fifth annual P-16 Librarian Workshop on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, for approximately 60 librarians across the region.
“This annual workshop supports the work of all librarians striving toward successful student transitions by developing an understanding of library instruction and creating seamless P-16 education,” Education Information Librarian Stephanie Hallam said. “The event was originally inspired by conversations that occurred during recruitment activities which revealed a need for school librarian professional development. Kent Library faculty found themselves in a unique position to support the work of local school librarians.”
The workshop ran throughout the day, highlighted by keynote speaker Karen Haggard from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. There were sessions on information literacy and free library resources for attendees to learn more.
The 2023 event is supported by a Southeast Funding for Results Implementation grant. Beginning in 2018, the workshop has quadrupled in the size of attendees. The event also has launched a faculty publication, local and national presentations, and garnered an invitation for a conference presentation. The annual workshop is currently free for the elementary, middle and high school librarians.
Kent Library aims to promote library literacy by teaching over 120 fall information sessions to approximately 3,000 students. This library instruction covers topics such as evaluating information, locating resources, developing research strategies, and using primary sources.
“This teaching provides the tools and resources to enrich, strengthen, and deepen learning,” Hallam said. “It improves student success both in their current education and in preparations for future careers.”
