The Southeast Missouri Department of Mass Media won two awards and the Southeast Arrow won 23 when the Missouri Broadcast Educators Association (MBEA) and Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) hosted their joint conference on April 1.
The Arrow hosted the convention this year for about 100 media students from across the state. The University’s student newspaper brought home 23 total awards, including a long winning streak in the Campus Engagement/Promotions category. Of those, 20 awards were MCMA awards.
“Anytime our students have the opportunity to be in positions of leadership and learn and collaborate with their peers, it is beneficial for all parties involved,” said Jasmine Evans, faculty advisor for the Arrow.
The Arrow is considered a Division 2 school and competes against Lidenwood University, Missouri Southern State University, Missouri Western State University, Northwest Missouri State University, Truman State University, and Webster University.
“The Arrow has an ongoing high standard of excellence,” Evans said. “This year’s wins are a direct reflection of the creativity, hard work, and management of our student editors.”
Three MBEA awards were given for work produced by Arrow students in the Multimedia Storytelling (MC421) course taught in the spring by Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck, chair of Southeast’s Department of Mass Media.
Two more of the MBEA awards were given to Southeast students in the Department of Mass Media who worked on film-related projects with Professor Fred Jones.
“Organizers said the contest was very competitive this year,” said Dr. Buck. “I’m very proud of our faculty and students and excited to share this great news.”
