The Monsters Within Us, an exhibition of works by Josephine Harris and Ariana Mullins, will be on view from Monday, October 10 through Friday, November 4 at The Nest Gallery, Seminary Building, River Campus.
Josephine Harris is in her senior year working towards a BFA with a specialization in graphic design. She is from Belleville, Illinois, and has always had a love for art. Throughout college, Josephine has enjoyed exploring different mediums; however, she is excited to see where graphic design will take her in her professional career.
Ariana Mullins is working towards a BFA with a specialization in ceramics. She grew up in Eureka, Missouri, where she explored and enjoyed the outdoors from a young age. She spent a lot of time outside, observing bugs and plants and searching for mushrooms with her family. Ariana loves painting and drawing, but more recently has been interested in ceramics. Most of her work is nature-based and includes plants, animals and mushrooms.
The works in this exhibition were inspired by the “Three Face Theory,” an ancient Japanese proverb that translates to: the first face you reveal to the world; the second face you reveal to your close friends and family; and the third face you reveal only to yourself. Harris and Mullins concentrate specifically on the face no one sees. In this exhibition, their third face is explored by unmasking the fears they possess.
A closing reception for The Monsters Within Us will take place on Friday, November 4 from 5-7 pm.
