Dr. Scott Brandhorst, instructor of psychology and counseling at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named director of the Jane Stephens Honors Program.
Brandhorst joined Southeast in 2008. His research interests are in clinical psychology and adolescent development.
He holds a doctoral degree in psychology, clinical psychology, from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology, a Master of Arts in counseling from Webster University and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
“I am excited to take on the role of director of the Jane Stephens Honors Program,” Brandhorst said. “I look forward to continuing to build upon the initiatives and directives my predecessors have put in place, to work closely with the faculty and students at Southeast to help enhance the experience for all students, and to grow the success of the Honors Program.”
In addition to a new director, the Jane Stephens Honors Program also has a new home. The program moved over the summer to Memorial Hall 103 from its previous location.
“Please stop by when you have a moment to check out the new space and learn more about the program and the benefits to students here,” Brandhorst said.
Dr. Doug Koch, Southeast vice provost and dean of Graduate Studies, said, “Scott has long-term experience working with honors students and the Student Research Conference. He brings great experience, passion, and excitement to the Honors Program and will ensure the opportunities for the honors students continue.”
Brandhorst replaces Dr. Joseph Snyder, assistant professor of history, who has served as the Honors Program interim director since spring 2021.
“I would like to thank Dr. Snyder for his efforts in leading the Honors Program over the past year,” Koch said. “We appreciate his leadership.”
The Jane Stephens Honors Program is designed to challenge students to achieve their academic/career goals and grow personally/socially over their time here at Southeast. “When you work towards achieving both goals, the student’s experience at Southeast is enhanced, leaving the student with the skill set necessary to achieve success once they leave Southeast,” Brandhorst said. The Honors Program helps them achieve these goals by providing honors students with opportunities to participate in smaller, interactive honors courses. They also may participate in an honors contract system enabling them to enroll in non-honors courses while earning honors credit through readings, research and presentations through collaboration with honors faculty. Honors students also may live in the LaFerla Hall Honors Learning Community.
