“History and Practice,” a collaborative exhibition of works created by Southeast Missouri State University art and history students, opens May 6 at the River Campus Art Annex Gallery.
Southeast students from the “American Art History” course and the “Drawing III: Advanced Problems” course collaborated to investigate the nature of historical and contemporary art and art making, creating works that explore our role in society and its relationship to American history.
The student artists created works based on the following topics:
- Mapping and Place: The exploration of historical and current socio-political aspects of the parceling of land.
- Portraiture and Stereotypes: The reinterpretation of the idea and nature of the portrait using a contemporary and historical approach on the subject while also using the portrait as a vehicle for discussing stereotypes.
- Text and Activism: The expression of a personal or global issue using text and imagery in a representational, symbolic or abstract way.
- Identity and New Media: The exploration of identity using new media, or non-traditional mediums.
