The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present a chamber music concert for flutes, cello and piano on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 pm in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Recital Hall on Southeast’s River Campus.
Southeast Missouri State University faculty members Dr. Sara Edgerton, cellist, and Paul Thompson, pianist, will be joined by guest flutists, Dr. James Thompson and Matthew Thompson in this eclectic, diverse and entertaining program of chamber music.
Repertoire to be performed include works by such well-known composers, including C.P.E. Bach, one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most famous sons, and Joseph Haydn. A number of colorful and evocative compositions from the twentieth century will also be presented, including Arvo Pärt’s meditative “Spiegel im Spiegel” and the lively “Jhala” movement from Alan Hovhaness’ “Yakamochi,” a suite for solo cello.
One of the highlights of the program will be a performance of “Winter Spirits” by American composer, Katherine Hoover. This work is one of three compositions she wrote that are influenced by the music of the Hopi tribe of the American Southwest.
The concert will conclude with a “Fantasy on Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable” by Wilhelm Popp. This short work is very operatic in nature and will provide a rousing conclusion to the program.
