Matt Rolwing, president of the Student Government Association (SGA), updated the Regents Feb. 21 on the current and ongoing work of Student Government this semester.

The SGA Executive Board created a new Conference Funding Account which will help provide funding for students to attend academic and professional conferences. This account was created to better suit the needs of students and organizations that have asked Student Government for more support in this area. Several organizations and groups have already received support, including the Southeast Sundancers, Omega Psi Phi and Zeta Phi Beta.

Rolwing, who will be graduating in May, said applications for a new SGA president and SGA executives were made available at the beginning of the spring semester, and there has been a significant and contested interest already.

The Executive Board has been focused on retention within SGA and is encouraging students to continue serving and supporting members leadership potential. A new point system was implemented for members to earn accolades for attending meetings and events and supporting friendly competitionwithin SGA.

Anna Carpenter was elected to serve as Parliamentarian. She is excited to join SGAs Executive Board and is taking the lead of the By-Laws Revision Committee.

Rolwing said SGA continues to focus on faculty and staff appreciation efforts. This semester, SGA will present certificates and decorate office doors to showcase students gratitude for faculty and staff members.

Beginning this semester, SGA Senators will be hosting College Town Halls. Student surveys have already been conducted, and SGA Senators are coordinating with their respective deans to answer student questions and concerns during the town hall events. The first Town Hall will be held March 18.

Additionally, SGA has also allocated $1,000 towards a new College Initiative Fund for each college to provide programming to their students.

On March 4 during Common Hour, the Student Issues Committee will host a Grand Re-Opening for the Center for Student Involvement (CSI), located on the second floor of the University Center. Games and snacks will be available. A Blessing Box will also be added in the CSI for students to donate or discreetly take non-perishable items. The committee is also working with the Redhawk Food Pantry to stock the new Blessing Box.

Rolwing said SGA continues to focus on better promoting mental health awareness among students. The Student Issues Committee is working with Southeasts Counseling and Disability Services, and is exploring free, mental health apps and tele-mental health apps for students to use.

The Special Projects Committee is continuing to focus on recycling and sustainability issues. The committee is also implementing the installation of water filtration systems and providing refillable water bottles across campus.

Additionally, the Special Projects Committee will be installing additional shuttle monitors on campus at Starbucks in the University Center and at the River Campus. Rolwing said the two current monitors on campus are widely used by students at LaFerla Hall and at the Multi-Modal Transfer Facility and provide an important service to students.

The University Affairs Committee, in collaboration with the Department of Public Safety (DPS), is hosting a free Self-Defense training March 28 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and Popcorn with the Police April 15 from noon-1 p.m. Information for the next Stop the Bleed and CPR training will be announced soon.

Rolwing said SGA is looking into collaborating with the Faculty Senate on changes to procedures for student evaluations of faculty members.

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host an Oxfam Hunger Banquet in March to highlight issues of hunger and poverty. The Committee will also continue the Culture POP Up Tents this semester. The Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) hosted the first event this past week in the University Center.

Rolwing concluded by sayingSGAs Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host three Ask A Blank Series events this semester on March 11,18 and 25 and will feature students from Peers Reinforcing Diversity through Education (PRIDE), Greek Life and the Black Student Union (BSU).
