Choosing a major can feel overwhelming, especially with so many possibilities. Some students arrive with a plan, while others are still exploring, and both are completely normal. Here are a few steps to help you figure out what might be the right path for you.

Start with Exploring Your Interests

College is the perfect time to try new things. Pay attention to what you enjoy in your classes, how you like to spend your time, and what energizes you. These clues reveal your interests, values, and skills.

Explore by joining campus organizations, volunteering, or taking electives outside your comfort zone. Real experiences help you see what fits and what doesn’t!

Know Your Strengths (and Weaknesses)

Understanding what you’re naturally good at—and not so good at—is a huge part of choosing a career. Are you a people person or more introverted? Do you like structure or flexibility? Recognizing these traits will help you rule out options that don’t align with who you are.

Use Campus Resources

You’re not in this alone. SEMO offers tools and people to help you along the way. Career Services provides assessments, one-on-one advising, job shadowing opportunities, resume help, and more. Academic advisors and career counselors are also available to talk through your ideas and help you plan.

Attend Events & Network

Take advantage of events like the Career Expo or guest speaker panels. These give you exposure to real careers, help you build your network, and might even spark new interests.

Narrow It Down

Once you’ve explored your options, start making a list of what feels like a good fit and cross out what doesn’t. Think of it as a process of elimination rather than perfection. You don’t need all the answers now. You just need to move in the right direction.

Take Your Time

Finding the right major is a journey, not a race. College is a time of growth and exploration, and at SEMO, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
