Explain your Career Path

Originally, I was going to look for a career in mathematics, but after taking Mathematical Programming, I decided to further explore computer science. From there, I studied to become a software engineer, getting a computer science minor where my math education was a great foundation for picking up CS skills. I was able to obtain a jr software engineering job after graduation and plan to continue in this field.

What was your Major at Southeast, and how would you characterize the quality of that program to prospective students?

I majored in applied mathematics and statistics. This program at Southeast gave me a solid foundation in logical and analytical thinking, skills essential for any career in STEM. The small class sizes were great for seeking help from educators and cultivating close relationships among my peers. The opportunities for leadership and learning outside of class were also very welcoming and abundant.

Why did you choose to attend Southeast?

It was the perfect distance from home, and it had great scholarships. The environment, on first glance, was also very friendly and calm.

Who influenced you most during your time at Southeast?

All of my professors were genuinely passionate about their subjects and were able to pass that enthusiasm to me. Two professors specifically, Dr. Daly and Dr. Oman, really challenged me in their classes, which was very rewarding when they enabled me to work problems I would have never thought possible for myself. I became a better thinker overall after their classes.

Share your best college memory.

On campus, one of my best memories was when my team placed much higher than expected during a math competition. Off campus, it was many memories hanging out with my friends in Greek life.

If you were involved in Greek Life, the Honors Program, or any other student organization, please share your experience and how it impacted you.

I was in a fraternity and made a ton of friends for life. I also felt more belonging on campus when I was new to the school.

What is the most important thing you learned while you were at Southeast?

No plan is set in stone! Plans will and should change as you and your understanding of the world grow.

Describe Southeast in three words

Comfortable, lively, and hilly!

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in your professional field?

Put as much effort as you can into class projects, as that's where you gain most of your experience, and you will be able to showcase those projects to employers.
