Actuarial Specialist - Aon — College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
I am working in the actuarial field. I will continue to take SOA exams to expand my professional knowledge, and I will work towards FSA designation.
I majored in Mathematics: Actuarial Science with minors in Data Science and Finance. This program was incredibly valuable to my career path. It’s very well coordinated, and it set me up for success in the professional space. I felt supported and encouraged throughout my entire academic journey.
I chose to attend Southeast because it was an affordable option with plenty of opportunities to learn and grow.
Dr. Emmanuel Thompson was the most influential figure during my time at Southeast. He was my academic advisor and professor, and he provided invaluable advice and support for academic opportunities and professional development.
My best college memory is spending most of my meal plan at Starbucks while studying with friends.
I was the president of the Actuarial Science Club at Southeast. It was a great opportunity to network, career prep, and learn more about what it takes to become an actuary.
The most important thing I learned was to say “yes” as much as you can. It opened the most doors for me. I got to study abroad in Finland, moderate a panel of STEM professionals, work for SEMO’s Institutional Research department, work in Florida for two months, and present two research projects of my own. None of these things would have happened if I hadn’t pushed myself to just go for it.
Accessible. Flexible. Opportunity.
I would suggest trying for as many internships and jobs as possible. Actuarial science can be a competitive field. Do as many interviews as you can, because you get so much better the more you practice. I was rejected for way more positions than I was offered; take advantage of the rejection and use it to improve.
