At Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), engineering and technology education is more than just a degree, it’s a lifelong journey. With hands-on learning at its core, SEMO’s Department of Engineering and Technology is fostering curiosity and career readiness in learners of all ages through dynamic outreach programs, community partnerships, and industry collaboration.
From hosting STEM summer camps and welcoming Scout troops to campus, to offering immersive experiences for high school students and providing alumni with ongoing professional development resources, SEMO’s impact in the STEM community is broad and lasting.
“We believe in creating early opportunities for students to see themselves as future engineers and innovators,” said Dr. Brad Deken, chair of the Department of Engineering and Technology. “By the time they’re ready for college, many already have a connection with SEMO through our camps, student trips and outreach initiatives.”
Through partnerships with schools, community groups and organizations like the Scouts, SEMO offers engaging STEM experiences aimed at elementary, middle and high school students. These events introduce participants to robotics, coding, electronics and problem-solving—key skills in today’s tech-driven world.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY
Each summer, SEMO’s popular engineering and technology camps invite students to explore STEM through project-based learning in state-of-the-art labs. SEMO students and faculty lead these sessions, giving young learners both mentorship and a firsthand look at campus life.
At the collegiate level, experiential learning remains central to SEMO’s curriculum. Honors clubs and student organizations frequently participate in design challenges, industry visits and national competitions. SEMO’s strong connections with its Engineering Advisory Board and regional employers also provide valuable internship and job placement opportunities for students.
“The input we get from our industry partners ensures we’re teaching students the skills employers actually need,” said Deken.
The department’s commitment doesn’t end at graduation. SEMO engineering and technology alumni benefit from a robust professional network, mentorship opportunities and continuing education resources. Many return as guest speakers, project sponsors or advisory board members—helping shape the next generation while advancing their own careers.
As the demand for skilled professionals in engineering and technology grows, SEMO remains a leader in preparing students for these in-demand careers. Through outreach, experiential learning and community collaboration, SEMO is making engineering accessible, exciting and impactful for learners at every stage.
