After working directly with entrepreneurs and business owners to launch and grow businesses in the region, Southeast Missouri State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is feeling positive about its impact in the first half of 2025.
In the southeast Missouri region, the SBDC has helped launch 13 businesses and hosted 31 business workshops with 243 entrepreneurs and owners participating. In addition, the SBDC has unlocked $1.9 million from various funding sources. Partnering with the SBDC means businesses receive tailored support, including business planning, financial forecasting, strategic development and guidance—all at no cost.
“Every business we support means more jobs, positive economic impact and a more vibrant southeast Missouri,” said Jakob Pallesen, SBDC director. “We’re proud to stand beside the entrepreneurs who are building something extraordinary right here in our region.”

Beyond direct coaching and one-on-one assistance, the SBDC team has expanded its impact through various initiatives. They participated in AI certification programs to stay ahead of emerging technologies and collaborated with high-school business programs to nurture future entrepreneurs. The team has launched a new effort to increase awareness of state and federal business support programs in hopes of connecting business and stakeholders with additional resources.
The SBDC in the southeast Missouri region has planned to expand its reach through two more Early-Stage Business Boot Camps, more targeted workshops and increased collaborations across campus and the region to gain more support for local entrepreneurs.
