Southeast Missouri State University has awarded the President’s Scholarship for the 2026 academic year to five remarkable seniors.

The recipients are Kaylee Horn of Marquette High School, Samantha Taylor of Parkway Central High School, Theo Rickert of Belleville West High School, Simon Lanter of Springfield High School and Isabella Pittman of Dexter High School.

“These students embody the Will to Do,” said SEMO President Dr. Carlos Vargas. “They have earned success in their academics and extracurriculars, and we are excited for them to find continued success at SEMO.”

The President’s Scholarship is SEMO’s most prestigious award, with over 100 high school seniors interviewing annually. The scholarship is renewable for students who meet the criteria, increasing each year for a total value of $43,000.

“Hearing these students’ stories each year is truly inspiring,” said Lenell Hahn, SEMO’s director of Admissions. “Their dedication, leadership, and achievements showcase the passion and drive that make them a perfect fit for the Southeast community.”

President’s Scholars

Kaylee Horn

Kaylee Horn, a soon-to-be graduate from Marquette High School in Ballwin, Missouri, is both an accomplished academic and a creative force. Throughout her high school years, Kaylee has distinguished herself as a talented poet, having published her work and earned accolades such as a featured poem in RSD Lives. Her artistic pursuits extend to visual art, where she has been an active member of the National Art Honor Society, as well as to music, where she’s contributed to her school’s Intermediate Advanced Choir. kylee-horn_740x494.webp

Outside of academics and the arts, Kaylee has made a positive impact in her community. Her volunteer work at Second Chance Ranch and More Than Coffee reflects her compassionate nature, while her role as a Kennel Technician at Country Acres Pet Resort showcases her responsibility and commitment. Kaylee is excited to pursue a degree in psychology, aiming to build on her passion for helping others and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Isabella Pittman

isabella-pittman_740x494.webpIsabella Pittman is from Dexter, Missouri, and will graduate from Dexter Senior High School this May. A dedicated student and leader, she has been actively involved in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Beta Club, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), holding multiple leadership positions throughout her high school career. Academically, she has excelled in rigorous courses, including AP Chemistry, AP World History and PLTW Principles of Engineering, demonstrating a deep commitment to learning and problem-solving.

Pittman’s passion for healthcare stems from personal experiences that shaped her desire to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in nursing at SEMO and gain experience as an ICU nurse before continuing her education in anesthesia. Her goal is to work at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, advocating for young patients and influencing healthcare policy.

Simon Lanter

Simon Lanter’s passion for music has been a driving force in his life, and it was during his high school years that he truly discovered the power of music education. After joining band at Springfield High School and picking up the drums, his band director mentored him, encouraging him to take on leadership roles that pushed his musical abilities to new heights. Serving as drum major and founding the Jazz Ensemble, Simon embraced the roles of both performer and mentor, fostering collaboration and musical growth in others.simon-lanter_740x494.webp

Now, Simon is eager to pursue a career in music education, aiming to create the same supportive environment for students that shaped his own journey. With a strong interest in both performance and teaching, he looks forward to joining ensembles and collaborating with fellow musicians at SEMO, a place he believes is perfect for turning his passion into a lifelong career. Simon graduates from Springfield High School this spring.

Their achievements extend to speech and acting, earning a top five finish at the 2023 National Speech and Debate Tournament. Balancing a perfect GPA, multiple extracurriculars, and a part-time job, Theo’s work ethic and passion set them apart.

Theo approaches every challenge with enthusiasm and a growth mindset, valuing learning beyond grades. Their ability to manage stress, communicate effectively, and stay resilient has fueled their success, including performing on Broadway’s Minskoff stage during the Jimmy Awards.
