Southeast Missouri State University restructured specific student support services over the last several months to minimize redundancy and better prepare students for academic success.
Last spring, Academic Support Center (ASC), the Center for Writing Labs (CWE), and the Mathematics Learning Center (Math Labs) merged into the Learning Assistance Programs (LAP) in Kent Library Suite 412. LAP helps students looking for tutoring assistance in writing, math, science, and any other area. Merging the variety of offerings into one office makes it easier for students to navigate where to find the academic support they need.
The LAP is composed of traditional course-specific tutoring, including supplemental instruction that prepares students to navigate their daily academic tasks. The math and writing centers offer help specific to the subject matter, including essay review.
“We can assist with understanding course materials and concepts, practicing skills, figuring out technology, or developing study skills” says Jennifer Weiss, director of Learning Assistance Programs and the Center for Writing Excellence. “Our learning assistants know how to adapt the session to best meet the students’ needs, with each session being driven by what the student needs in the moment.”
The academic support offered by the LAP is free for students with some services available online or without appointment.
