Southeast Missouri State University has worked with Notre Dame Regional High School to create a “Redhawk Roadmap” to help students start college with more credits under their belt.
The Redhawk Roadmap lays out the courses students need to complete general coursework (Missouri’s CORE 42) to easily transfer into a degree program when they’re ready. It also saves students money on college courses. Jackson High School also utilizes a Redhawk Roadmap.
“Roadmaps and guides are becoming increasingly more mainstream across the United States as students and families are looking for ways to save time and money,” said Karie Stroder, assistant director for Early College Programs at Southeast. “It really takes the guesswork out of the course selection for students.”
The State of Missouri built the CORE 42 as a framework for general education. All public colleges and universities use the CORE 42, which helps make college coursework uniform throughout the state. Students who complete the courses can transfer those credits into any Missouri public institution, along with certain private ones.
“Transferability is always a question when evaluating which college credit options are beneficial to students and families,” said Amanda Mueth, director of the Counselor’s Office at Notre Dame Regional High School. “At Notre Dame, we teach students how to evaluate options that best meet their future needs. The Roadmap allows students to more confidently select their college credit courses while families can take advantage of the discounted cost.”
The Redhawk Roadmap includes 42 credit hours in the academic categories of social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, written communication, natural sciences, civics, oral communication, and humanities and fine arts. This helps create an easy and clear path for students starting their college degree.
It also includes a one-hour class to introduce Notre Dame students to Southeast.
“Studies indicate that students who take college coursework while in high school are more likely to enroll, persist and graduate college,” said Stroder. “Students can have a positive experience at Southeast, which makes them more likely to continue their education here. This also provides students with a seamless transition into their degree program of choice at Southeast. It’s one more way we can help our students succeed.”
