Southeast Missouri State University alumna Brandi Compass has been awarded the Outstanding Middle School Mathematics Educator of the Year award for 2022 by the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM).
MCTM is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and improving mathematics teaching and learning at all levels. Compass, as a 13-year member of the MCTM, was honored to receive her award at this year’s MCTM Fall Conference.
“To be named the recipient of the Outstanding Middle School Mathematics Educator of the Year Award for 2022 means so much to me,” said Compass. “I remember the first MCTM Conference I attended 13 years ago as a first-year teacher and watching those teachers receive their awards. I sat there thinking I’d love to be able to receive this award someday. It has been very humbling knowing my peers think highly enough of me as a math teacher to nominate me for this award.”
Compass earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with an emphasis in mathematics and a master’s degree in elementary education with an emphasis in mathematics and science. She is now a sixth-grade math teacher at Poplar Bluff Middle School in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and says teaching was her destiny.
“As far back as I can remember I have always wanted to be a teacher,” said Compass. “I truly believe I was born to be a teacher. My passion fully guides me in my field of work, and I truly love what I do. I use that passion to push me in my lessons and in turn I hope that passion comes through to my students.”
Compass has since completed her doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Lindenwood University. Now, she is working on completing a specialist degree in administration from Southeast, the place she credits with preparing her for her career as a teacher.
“My time at Southeast Missouri State University thoroughly prepared me to be an outstanding teacher,” said Compass. “I truly value the education and experiences I gained while being a student at SEMO. This University provides rigorous instruction that ensures you are prepared to step into the career your degree is focused on.”
