To help you feel more confident and prepared, we’ve gathered some our top admissions tips to keep in mind as you start your college journey
The college search can feel like a whirlwind—applications, deadlines, essays, campus visits, and so many questions. But here’s a secret: admissions counselors aren’t here to intimidate you. We’re here to help. Think of us as your own personal guide to schools you may be interested in.
To help you feel more confident and prepared, we’ve gathered some our top admissions tips to keep in mind as you start your college journey:
Counselors are here to support you, not to judge you.
Our literal job is to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and help you find your best-fit school. Don’t hesitate to reach out—we want to hear from you!
Deadlines matter—really.
This might seem obvious, but every year we see great students miss out on scholarships or even admission because they waited too long. Create a calendar or set reminders for important deadlines, especially for financial aid, housing, and scholarships. Early action can give you more options.
Don’t rule out a school based on sticker price.
A college’s listed tuition might look intimidating, but it’s not the full story. Often, what price is listed is not what you pay. SEMO offers generous scholarships and financial aid packages. If you think you’ll never qualify for a scholarship, 75 percent of our students do! Use net price calculators, apply for aid early, and don’t assume a school is out of reach until you’ve seen your financial aid package.
Campus visits are more valuable than you think.
You can learn a lot from brochures and websites, but nothing compares to walking around campus, sitting in on a class, or talking to current students. A visit helps you feel the vibe and often confirms whether a school feels right. At SEMO, we offer personalized tours and events to help you experience campus life firsthand.
Ask questions and lots of them.
There are no dumb questions when it comes to your future. Want to know what dorm life is like? Curious about study abroad or internships? Wondering how to double major? Just ask. The more you know, the better your decision will be—and counselors love seeing students take initiative.
It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to be.
Choosing a college major can feel like a huge decision—but it’s not one you need to have completely figured out right now. Many students start college undecided, and SEMO offers resources to help you explore your interests and find your path without wasting money on classes that won’t count toward a degree.
If SEMO feels like the right fit or you’re ready to learn more, we encourage you to take the next step. Schedule a campus visit to get a feel for life as a Redhawk.
