The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a test that measures whether you’re ready to begin working as a registered nurse or practical nurse. It’s given by the organization that oversees nursing boards across the U.S. For the first two quarters of 2025, SEMO had a 96.67% NCLEX pass rate.
So, don’t stress — SEMO will help you succeed. But just to be extra prepared, here are some NCLEX test-taking strategies:
1. Know the NCLEX Format
Understanding how the test works is half the battle. The NCLEX isn’t just about recall, it’s about clinical judgement and safe practice. The exam question types can vary between multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, chart-based, or other questions.
2. Manage Your Time Wisely
Don’t rush, but don’t overthink either. If you’re stuck on a question, take a breath, eliminate obvious wrong answers, and make your best educated guess. Your first choice is usually correct.
3. Avoid Answer Traps
Watch out for absolutes like “always,” “never,” or “only”. These are rarely correct. Ask yourself: Which option protects the patient the most? Be confident in your answer and don’t change it. Take it one question at a time.
4. Don’t Cram the Night Before
Have a goal of completing 25-50 NCLEX exam practice questions daily and review rationales with each question. Trust your preparation and your instincts. Your brain needs rest, so the night before prep your test day essentials and get 7-8 hours of sleep.
5. Use Positive Self-Talk
Test anxiety is real. Remind yourself you’ve prepared for this, and you know how to take care of patients. Confidence is part of performance. Walk in like you’re already a nurse.
6. After the Test, Let It Go
Don’t dwell on whether you passed. Go relax—you’ve earned it.
