First STEP isn’t just a box to check off—it’s a major moment in your transition from high school to college life.
First STEP isn’t just a box to check off—it’s a major moment in your transition from high school to college life. It’s where you meet your academic advisor, register for your first classes, explore campus, and start building the foundation for your college success.
So how do you make the most of it? We’ve got you covered!
Come Prepared but Keep an Open Mind
Before orientation, make sure you’ve submitted your transcripts, take note of any required placement tests, and reviewed your intended major.
Pro Tip: Even if you’re unsure of your major, First STEP is the perfect time to explore your options. SEMO offers nearly 150 undergraduate academic programs, and you’ll meet with an advisor who can help guide your path.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
This is your time to get answers about classes, housing, meal plans, student life, campus jobs, and more. Orientation leaders and SEMO staff are here for you, so speak up! We won’t think your questions are silly—we were all new students at some point too!
Pro Tip: Come with a list of things you’re curious about. You’ll leave feeling much more confident (and excited) for the fall.
Get to Know Your New Home Away from Home
Orientation includes an optional campus tour, but this is your opportunity to take it a step further. Explore residence halls, check out the Student Recreation Center, and find those important spots like the library, dining hall, and your academic buildings.
Pro Tip: Visit Life at SEMO to preview the clubs, events, and experiences waiting for you.
Connect with Future Classmates
You’re not doing this alone—every other student at First STEP is also new. Whether you’re from down the street or across the country, use this day to introduce yourself, share a few laughs, and make some early friendships.
Pro Tip: Follow SEMO’s social media channels and join ZeeMee to stay in the loop and meet others before move-in day.
Involve Your Family. They Have Questions Too
First STEP includes sessions designed specifically for parents and guests. They’ll learn about academics, financial aid, safety, and the support systems SEMO has in place for students.
Pro Tip: Encourage your family or guest to attend their track. It will help them feel more at ease, and they’ll be better equipped to support you during your first year.
Register for Classes with Confidence
One of the biggest parts of First STEP is meeting with your academic advisor and registering for your first college classes.
Pro Tip: Bring a list of any dual credit or AP courses you’ve taken. This can help place you in the right classes and possibly give you a head start.
Keep the Momentum Going
After First STEP, you’ll feel the excitement—and maybe a little nervousness—kick in. That’s totally normal! Use the summer to prepare for move-in, connect with your new Redhawk community, and check off your next to-dos.
Pro Tip: Log in to your Admitted Student Checklist to keep track of your progress.
Come curious, leave confident, and get ready to soar as a Redhawk. Haven’t registered for orientation yet? Reserve your First STEP spot here.
