Upon a motion by Janzow; seconded by McGowan, the minutes of December 2, 2008 were
unanimously approved.
B. ACTION ITEMS:
1. Business & Marketing Education Program Changes
Noe moved approval of Business and Marketing Education program changes; Aide seconded.
Carolyn Rainey explained that the program changes are necessary due to many requirement
changes that have occurred since the program was initially approved in Spring 2005.
Discussion followed and changes were suggested for the documentation. Stephens asked
that Rainey email the corrected document to J. Smith. Motion passed unanimously.
2. New Option: BS in Biology, Marine Biology
McGowan moved approval of the new option, Marine Biology, to the BS in Biology; Shaw
seconded. McGowan explained that there have been many requests for this option but
had never been feasible until now; they’ve continued a good relationship with the
Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) and now have a faculty member able to teach
the content. Stephens asked if additional classes would be necessary; McGowan and
Taylor explained that additional classes are needed, and are on thirty day review.
These classes are already being offered as topics classes, and have been successful.
Shaw noted that with the classes on thirty day review, the motion will be contingent
on the approval of those classes. Discussion continued. Motion passed unanimously.
3. Applied Behavior Analysis Certificate Program
Stephens explained that Dr. Shafaie has worked with parents of autistic children,
and that Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one means of treating autistic children
that has been well received in our area. Prater moved approval of the ABA Certificate
Program; Noe seconded. Dr. Shafaie discussed the program and answered questions from
the Council. Hinkle clarified that the University will not be offering this as a
“certificate” degree; Shafaie explained that this is a “national certification” this
is external to Southeast, and students must pass a national exam to become board certified.
Discussion continued. Motion passed unanimously.
4. Program Name Change: MA, Community Counseling to MA, Mental Health Counseling
