Filmmaking students from Southeast Missouri State University, area high schools and other institutions from across the Midwest will present their films and showcase their creative talent at Southeasts 11th annual Fault Line Film Festival.
This years film festival will be held virtually through April 17.
Fred Jones, professor of mass media at Southeast, said that the Fault Line Film Festival provides an experiential learning opportunity to students from a wide variety of majors.
Jones said, The Fault Line Film Festival showcases the talents of our students. Besides the filmmakers, actors and crew, many other students collaborate on this festival. Public relations students promote the festival and advertising students create posters. The festival benefits student filmmakers throughout the Midwest by giving them an outlet for their work.
Each film submitted by students is entered into one of seven categories. The films can be viewed on the 11th Annual Faultline Film Festivals YouTube Channel. The online viewing schedule will be as follows:
- Monday, April 12 Drama and Mystery/Suspense
- Tuesday, April 13 Comedy and Alternative
- Wednesday, April 14 Southeast Showcase
- Thursday, April 15 Long Form
- Friday, April 16 Best of Fault Line 2010-2020
- Saturday, April 17 Awards Night
Jake McGruder, a junior mass communication major, TV and film option, from East Prairie, Missouri, scored an honorable mention at the 2020 Fault Line Film Festival with his long form film The Big Day. This year, McGruder is submitting a short film in the Drama and Mystery/Suspense category.
McGruder said, My experience with the Fault Line Film Festival put me on sets directing a crew and actors. I got to work on two consecutive projects. The lessons I learned from that experience are priceless.
McGruder said his experiences on set and interactions with members of Southeasts mass communication faculty secured his decision to pursue film as a career. He said that any students who are interested in film shouldnt hesitate to get involved in the Fault Line Film Festival.
If you have any interest in making film, just write a script and start shooting it for next years festival, McGruder said. You will learn so much more than I could ever describe.
An award for best film will be given within each category, as well as an award for Best of Festival. In addition, an award is given to a film that showcases outstanding technical achievement. The awards are $250 per category and the Best of Festival winner will receive a $1,000 prize.
