Counting Backwards from Zero, an installation by Benjamin Terry, will be on view Friday, November 6 through Friday, January 15, in the Wolz Ruzicka Hallway Gallery.
Benjamin Terry lives and works in Dallas, TX. He received an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of North Texas in 2013. He has exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions internationally including Atlanta, Brooklyn, London, Mexico City, San Francisco, Dallas, and Houston. Terry will be an artist-in-resident at the McColl Center in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2027, and was an artist-in-resident at 100 West Corsicana in 2020 and The Maple Terrace in Brooklyn in 2018. He was featured in volumes 96 and 132 of New American Paintings, and has received both the Clare Hart Degoyler and the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough awards from the Dallas Museum of Art. He is currently a Distinguished Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas, Arlington.
According to Terry, “I am a painter whose work moves between painting, object, and architectural space. Rather than treating painting as a self-contained image, I approach it as something that can be constructed and encountered physically. For the Wolz Ruzicka Hallway Gallery, cut and painted plywood strips extend painting into the architecture of the space, functioning simultaneously as drawing, painting, and sculpture. The work builds on an ongoing body of modular constructions presented at Paper Mill Projects in Chatham, NY (2025), Cheerleader in Dallas, TX (2026), and Bits and Bobs at Galleri Urbane in Dallas, TX (2021).”
An opening reception for Counting Backwards from Zero will take place on Friday, November 6 from 5-7 p.m. The Wolz Ruzicka Hallway Gallery is located inside the ARX Building. All gallery exhibitions, events, and talks are free and open to the public. For more information, contact at Dr. Joni Hand at jhand@semo.edu.
